Heavy Rain Causes Deadly Floods in Beijing, Over 80,000 People Evacuated

Beijing, the capital of China, has been hit by its worst flooding in decades after several days of heavy rainfall. The disaster has forced more than 80,000 people to leave their homes and move to safer areas.

So far, at least 38 people have died due to the severe weather. Floodwaters have damaged homes, shops, and government buildings. More than 130 villages near the city have lost power, creating major problems for residents.

The worst-affected districts are Miyun and Yanqing, where rainfall reached over 500 millimeters in some places. These areas are located in lower parts of Beijing and are more vulnerable to flooding.

The Chinese government has declared a state of emergency to deal with the disaster. President Xi Jinping has ordered all necessary steps to protect people and restore normal services. Emergency response teams are actively working in the affected areas.

To support recovery, the government has already announced 550 million yuan (about 76.7 million US dollars) in emergency funds. This money will be used to repair roads, power lines, and other public services.

According to China’s official media, 31 roads in Beijing have been damaged by the floods. While some roads have reopened after repairs, work is still ongoing on at least 16 roads. Continued rain may slow down the repair process.

Between last Wednesday and midnight Monday, Beijing received 165.9 millimeters of rain. However, some areas saw much heavier rainfall, with nearly 95 millimeters falling in just one hour on Monday night.

China's weather department has warned that more rain could come in the following days. Authorities are urging people to stay alert and follow safety guidelines as repair and rescue efforts continue across the region.
