The marriage of rock musician Jack White and his wife, singer Olivia Jean, has come to an end. Jean has filed for divorce from the former White Stripes frontman, citing "inappropriate marital conduct" in legal documents filed in Nashville on June 3 .
The 36-year-old musician listed the same date as the couple's separation. In her filing, Jean alleges that White, 50, is "guilty of inappropriate marital conduct, which makes further cohabitation unsafe and improper" . The legal documents include a request for spousal support, with Jean stating that she relies on White's income for financial support. She has also asked to remain on his life insurance policy despite the separation .
In Tennessee, "inappropriate marital conduct" is a standard legal term used in divorce proceedings, serving as a catch-all category for fault-based filings . The petition does not provide specific details about the alleged conduct .
The couple's last public appearance together was in New York City in April. White's most recent Instagram post about Jean, dated that same month, celebrated their third wedding anniversary. "Happy 3rd wedding anniversary to this bad ass Detroit guitar player chick I love, Mrs. Olivia Jean," he wrote at the time .
Neither White nor Jean has publicly commented on the divorce filing.
The marriage began in unconventional fashion during a concert at Detroit's Masonic Temple Theatre in April 2022. White proposed to Jean on stage, and the couple married moments later during the performance . The proposal came during a rendition of the White Stripes song "Hotel Yorba," which contains the lyrics "Let's get married in a big cathedral by a priest" . Third Man Records co-founder Ben Swank officiated the ceremony .
Jean described the event to The New York Times as "the best experience of my life," adding that "you could plan a wedding for five years and it wouldn't compare to that" . White later explained on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that the timing felt right because the day had gone so well, leading him to ask Jean whether she wanted to marry then or wait .
Their relationship developed slowly over many years. The two first met in 2009 when Jean left a demo CD at one of White's concerts, according to reports. They began dating in 2014 after several years of friendship . Jean reflected on their relationship's gradual nature, noting that "you have to know that you can be friends for a while before you can date" .
This divorce marks White's third. He was previously married to his White Stripes bandmate Meg White from 1996 to 2000. He later married model and singer Karen Elson in 2005; they divorced in 2013. White and Elson share two children: daughter Scarlett, 20, and son Henry Lee, 18 .
Jean, a Detroit native, is the frontwoman of the garage rock band The Black Belles and has released solo music through White's record label, Third Man Records . Her divorce petition states that she is "dependent on [White's] income for her support" and requests that all jointly purchased property, including real estate and furniture, be equitably divided between the parties . The couple does not share any children .
White is currently on tour and is scheduled to release his new album "Frozen Charlotte" on July 10.
