The opening night of Lionel Richie's highly anticipated summer tour took an unexpected turn Wednesday when the music icon was forced to end his performance early due to a health issue.
Richie, 77, was performing at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, as part of the "Sing a Song All Night Long" tour alongside Earth, Wind & Fire when he began experiencing dizziness approximately 55 minutes into his set.
The legendary singer-songwriter, known for timeless hits spanning five decades, displayed visible signs of distress during his performance. Video footage from the concert showed Richie sitting down multiple times while attempting to perform his upbeat 1980s classic "Dancing on the Ceiling".
Addressing the crowd with his characteristic humor, Richie acknowledged the situation directly. "When you're feeling dizzy, sit your ass down," he told concertgoers, adding that it was the first time in his career he had performed the energetic track from a seated position.
Despite the apparent discomfort, Richie continued performing and moved to the piano to deliver a rendition of his beloved ballad "Three Times a Lady". After completing the song, he announced an unexpected intermission and exited the stage, telling the audience he needed to avoid "falling over".
Concertgoers initially expected the break to be temporary. Richie's five band members remained on stage for approximately 15 minutes before quietly departing, while soft recorded music played through the arena speakers.
Medical Concerns and Tour Uncertainty
The uncertainty stretched on for nearly 40 minutes before saxophonist Dino Soldo returned to the stage with disappointing news for the thousands of fans in attendance.
"Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well," Soldo told the audience. "He won't be able to continue. Additional information will be available".
Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris later indicated that Richie had shown no warning signs before the concert and suggested the singer may have been experiencing mild dehydration. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer had appeared healthy during rehearsals and soundcheck earlier that day.
The health scare comes as Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire launched the third installment of their co-headlining trek, following successful runs in 2023 and 2024. The 26-city North American tour is currently scheduled to continue through August 14, with performances planned at major venues including New York's Madison Square Garden and Los Angeles' Intuit Dome.
The next scheduled concert is set for Friday at the United Center in Chicago. As of Thursday morning, representatives for Richie had not issued an official statement regarding his condition or the status of upcoming performances.
Wednesday's show was the opening stop of what was expected to be a summer-long celebration of the two iconic acts' extensive catalogs. Earth, Wind & Fire had performed a 50-minute opening set, followed by Richie's abbreviated performance.
Fans who attended the St. Paul concert expressed both concern for the singer's well-being and disappointment over the abbreviated show. Many took to social media to share videos and well-wishes for the veteran performer's recovery.
Richie, who celebrated his 77th birthday earlier this month, has maintained an active performance schedule in recent years, including his ongoing role as a judge on American Idol. The "Hello" and "All Night Long" singer has been a fixture in popular music since his days with the Commodores in the 1970s, building a solo career that has earned him multiple Grammy Awards and international acclaim.
The music industry and fans alike now await further information about Richie's condition and whether the tour will proceed as planned.
