Nearly a decade after The Vampire Diaries concluded its eight-season run, fan-favorite stars Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley are reuniting for a new television project. The duo will star in and executive produce You Deserve to Know, a suspense drama currently in development at Hulu . The series is an adaptation of Aggie Blum Thompson’s 2025 thriller novel of the same name .

You Deserve to Know marks a significant departure from the supernatural world of Mystic Falls, trading vampires and doppelgangers for suburban intrigue and murder. The series follows three suburban couples who are next-door neighbors and best friends. Their seemingly idyllic lives are shattered when one of the husbands is murdered, exposing a shocking trail of secrets that threatens to destroy their friendships .

Dobrev will portray Gwen, while Wesley takes on the role of Scott, two neighbors who find themselves on opposing sides of the ensuing murder investigation . The characters are described as being on a collision course as the mystery unfolds, putting the former on-screen lovers in a tense, adversarial dynamic for the first time .

The project is being developed by a team that includes Brian Tanen, known for developing Grand Hotel and serving as co-showrunner on Hulu's Love, Victor, who will write the pilot . The series is produced by Alex Cooper's Unwell and Aaron Kaplan's Kapital Entertainment, with 20th Television serving as the studio . The project landed at Hulu after a competitive bidding situation .

Both Dobrev and Wesley shared their excitement about the project on social media. Dobrev expressed her enthusiasm for the adaptation, noting that she and Wesley "fell in love with this novel" and that working on it from both sides of the camera has been "incredibly exciting" . She also shared a post with the caption, "Some things refuse to stay buried" . Wesley echoed her sentiment, calling the reunion "thrilling" .

This reunion comes after years of the pair building separate careers. Wesley has continued to work steadily, most recently starring in the fifth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Dobrev has remained active in film and television, and has expressed a growing passion for producing, describing it as a fulfilling way to be more actively involved in the creative process .

The announcement has generated considerable buzz, largely due to the enduring popularity of The Vampire Diaries and the complicated history between its two leads. Dobrev and Wesley played Elena Gilbert and Stefan Salvatore, the central pair in a love triangle that captivated audiences from 2009 to 2017 . While their on-screen chemistry was undeniable, both actors have candidly discussed their initial tension off-screen. Dobrev once admitted that during the first five months of filming, they "despised each other," a friction that she later realized translated into their powerful on-screen dynamic . Wesley revealed he used a specific method acting approach for their chemistry read, intentionally avoiding contact with Dobrev beforehand to create a genuine first meeting in the scene .

Despite their rocky start, the actors have since become close friends. Wesley noted on a podcast that they eventually outgrew their early tension and became "such good friends," even hinting that they were "dabbling with maybe doing something together" . Their long-awaited collaboration has now come to fruition with You Deserve to Know.

Currently, You Deserve to Know remains in early development. Hulu has not yet announced a premiere date, additional casting, or a production schedule . However, the project represents a significant milestone for both actors, marking their first major on-screen reunion since the end of The Vampire Diaries. Fans of the iconic series will have to wait to see how Dobrev and Wesley navigate this new, complex dynamic when the series eventually debuts.
