As Prince Harry's planned return to the United Kingdom approaches, a royal security insider has pushed back against the Duke of Sussex's concerns over protective security, describing the dispute as politically motivated rather than a genuine safety issue.
The Duke had previously stated that accommodation in the UK has "never" been a problem for him and his family, but that protective security remains a significant concern. However, when the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) declined his request for police protection, the Sussexes' travel plans were thrown into doubt within 24 hours.
TalkTV host Mark Dolan, citing a source with decades of experience in royal security, offered a blunt assessment of the situation. "I spoke to somebody who was intimately involved in royal security for decades," Dolan told the Daily Express. "He said to me: 'This is all nonsense. It's politics. It's not security. It's Harry flexing his muscles within the family'" .
Prince William Reportedly 'Appalled' by King Charles' Decision to Welcome Harry and Meghan
The insider further clarified that while the RAVEC decision remains on pause, there is ongoing liaison with police for the security team overseeing Harry and Meghan. The source insisted it is "abundantly clear that as long as Harry is on British soil, he will be safe" .
Buckingham Palace sources have indicated that King Charles extended an offer for the Sussexes to stay at a royal residence, which would include royal security protocol. The monarch is reportedly eager to spend time with his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, whom he has not seen in person since the late Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.
However, the Sussexes have yet to respond to this offer, and the Duke's spokesperson has maintained that accommodation was never the primary issue. "The issue has never been accommodation," a representative for Harry stated. "The issue is whether appropriate and proportionate protective security is being provided throughout the entirety of the visit" .
Harry has consistently argued that "risk follows the person, not the place" . His team has expressed frustration that a Risk Management Board review, which RAVEC itself deemed necessary last November, has still not taken place .
The Duke has faced a protracted legal battle with the Home Office over security arrangements since his level of protection changed when he stepped down as a working royal in 2020. In May 2025, Harry lost an appeal challenging the government's decision to reduce his publicly funded security .
With the Sussexes reportedly due to arrive in the UK within days, no confirmation has been provided by either the couple or the Palace regarding final arrangements. The uncertainty continues to overshadow what was intended to be a significant family reunion.
