Josh Brolin has revealed that he nearly walked away from Ridley Scott's upcoming post-apocalyptic film, "The Dog Stars," early in production. A timely intervention from the 88-year-old director himself was all it took to change the actor's mind .

The 58-year-old actor told Empire magazine that he "got really scared" shortly after filming began, largely due to Scott's famously instinctive and low-rehearsal approach on set . Brolin said the director spent more time telling stories than rehearsing, which left him feeling deeply unsettled.

"I went back, called my agent and said, 'I want out. Something's really wrong, and I've got to get the f--- out of here,'" Brolin recalled . His agent, who is also a close friend, suggested he take a day to rest and reconsider, a tactic Brolin saw through immediately.

What ultimately turned things around was Scott himself. The director invited Brolin into his trailer and played back a scene they had just filmed together with co-star Jacob Elordi. The footage spoke for itself .

"[Ridley] goes, 'Come here,' and he brought me into his trailer, and played the scene we had just finished," Brolin explained. "It was a really good, very dynamic scene between me and Jacob, and he goes, 'Okay?' I go, 'Okay,' and then I started to feed off that" .

While Brolin had previously worked with Scott on the 2007 crime drama "American Gangster" , the director's brisk multi-camera style still caught him off guard. The actor admitted it took a day or two to adjust before something clicked.

"I got super into it because it was stratospherically creative and stratospherically dangerous," Brolin said . He noted that he had been actively seeking out that kind of challenge, only to resist it when it arrived. In the end, he said the project "became one of the more creative, satisfying projects that I've ever been involved with" .

"The Dog Stars," adapted by Mark L. Smith from Peter Heller's 2012 novel , is set in a world ravaged by a pandemic. Brolin plays ex-Marine Bangley alongside Elordi, who portrays a civilian pilot navigating the brutal wasteland. A mysterious radio transmission sends the pilot on a search for something to believe in. The ensemble cast also includes Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Benedict Wong, and Allison Janney . The film is scheduled for release on August 26 .
