Jesy Nelson has unveiled the raw, emotional moment she learned her twin daughters were diagnosed with a rare and severe muscle-wasting condition, sharing a gripping trailer for her upcoming Amazon Prime documentary, Life Changing.
The 35-year-old former Little Mix star released the preview on Thursday, giving fans an intimate look at the life-altering news she received about her one-year-old daughters, Ocean and Story . The documentary is set to premiere on July 17 .
Nelson first revealed in January that her twins had been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1, a rare genetic neuromuscular disorder that causes progressive muscle weakness . Due to the late diagnosis, the girls are unlikely to ever walk and require specialist equipment to assist with breathing at night, as well as feeding tubes .
In the emotional trailer, Nelson is seen cradling her eight-week-old daughters as a doctor delivers the devastating results: "The genetic testing came back positive for Spinal Muscular Atrophy" . The singer breaks down in tears, expressing her disbelief and heartbreak. "I can't believe this is happening," she says. "It's the most severe muscle disease a baby can have. I don't know how we are going to do this. I feel like I'm going to feel heartbroken for the rest of my life" .
The documentary also highlights the overwhelming burden of constant medical care. "I get bombarded with hospital appointments, my whole life has changed," Nelson shares in the trailer, revealing the daily reality of managing her daughters' complex needs .
Alongside the trailer, Nelson penned an emotional message to her followers, emphasizing the urgent need for change. "It's the most heartbreaking series I've ever had to make, but it's one that needed to be made if we're ever going to see real change," she wrote. "I truly hope this helps people understand why the heel prick test and treatment from birth are so incredibly vital. Early diagnosis can change EVERYTHING" .
The documentary is not only a personal account but also a powerful advocacy tool. Nelson is spearheading a campaign for universal newborn screening for SMA across England. Last month, she took her fight to Parliament, supporting a petition that garnered over 150,000 signatures demanding all newborns be tested for the condition .
However, the outcome of the parliamentary debate was disappointing for Nelson and the SMA community. Currently, the screening rollout in England is slated to begin in October but will only cover 72% of babies, with major cities like Bristol, Cambridge, and Leeds initially excluded . Scotland began screening in March.
Speaking after the debate, Nelson fought back tears as she expressed her fury at the limited rollout. "I'm going to be completely honest, I was absolutely fuming. I feel so let down," she said. "You are basically telling me that if you live in a certain postcode, you're not as important. It's outrageous" . She continues to advocate for 100% coverage, arguing that every baby deserves the same chance at a healthy life .
Jesy Nelson: Life Changing will stream on Prime Video starting July 17. The documentary promises a raw and powerful look at her journey as she comes to terms with her daughters' diagnosis, adapts to their daily challenges, and finds her strength as a single mother following her split from ex-fiancé Zion Foster .
