Melissa Gilbert has officially vacated her New York City apartment, marking the end of an eight-year chapter in the Upper West Side as her husband faces serious legal proceedings in New Mexico.
The "Little House on the Prairie" star announced her departure through an emotional Instagram post on Tuesday, sharing glimpses of her moving process with followers. The 61-year-old actress documented stacks of packed boxes, empty rooms, and wrapped furniture as she prepared to leave the one-bedroom residence she shared with actor Timothy Busfield.
Gilbert's social media post showed her lying on the floor beside packed belongings, offering a candid look at the transition. The images captured her bedroom with a mattress leaning against the wall, an almost empty bathroom, and a living room filled with flattened cardboard boxes and furniture ready for transport.

"So long perfect little one bedroom apartment on the Upper West Side. The last eight years here have been so special," Gilbert wrote in her caption. She reflected on her time in the city, noting the significant work she accomplished in New York's theaters and soundstages, along with memorable dinners and nights spent with friends.
The actress expressed what she will miss most about her urban lifestyle, including walking through the neighborhood, riding the subway, and connecting with the diverse community she encountered daily. She bid farewell to local businesses she frequented, including her favorite newsstand, bodega, dance studio, laundry service, shoe repair shop, dry cleaners, and nail salon.
"You can feel it in your heart," Gilbert wrote about the city's energy. "Goodbye sweet neighbors whom we love so much. And a very fond 'farewell and see you soon' to our favorite city in the world."
While Gilbert assured followers she would return to New York eventually, she indicated that current circumstances require her to relocate full-time to the couple's upstate New York property. The move comes after federal agents raided that same property earlier this year, though details surrounding that operation remain limited.
The relocation follows Busfield's arrest in January on serious charges in New Mexico. The 69-year-old actor faces allegations of criminal sexual contact with a minor and child abuse stemming from incidents that reportedly occurred while he worked on Fox's "The Cleaning Lady" in October 2022.
Court documents indicate that Busfield was initially arrested on January 13 on two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse. A warrant issued on January 9 alleged that Busfield engaged in unlawful sexual conduct with 11-year-old twin boys.
Following a pretrial detention hearing in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Busfield was released from custody one week after his initial arrest. The legal proceedings continued to escalate when a New Mexico grand jury formally charged him on February 6 with four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child under 13.
Busfield has consistently denied all allegations against him. His legal team has filed a motion to quash the grand jury indictment, challenging the validity of the charges. The case is currently scheduled to proceed to trial in May 2027, leaving a significant period before any resolution is reached.
The couple, who married in 2013, have maintained a relatively private life together, splitting their time between New York City and their upstate property. Gilbert, who rose to fame as a child actress on the iconic television series "Little House on the Prairie," has continued working in entertainment while also engaging in various personal and professional pursuits.
Busfield, known for his roles in "thirtysomething" and "The West Wing," has largely stepped away from public appearances since the allegations surfaced. The entertainment industry has watched the case closely, given the serious nature of the charges and the couple's established presence in Hollywood.
Gilbert's Instagram post concluded with an optimistic note about the transition, expressing excitement about living full-time in their upstate home "for a good long while." She acknowledged the complexity of the moment without delving into specifics, simply stating, "It's just that right now......well.... you know."
The actress has not publicly commented on the charges against her husband beyond her social media announcement about the move. Her decision to leave the city comes amid what appears to be a difficult period for the family as they navigate the legal proceedings.
Neighbors and local business owners in the Upper West Side have expressed surprise at Gilbert's departure, noting that she had been a familiar and friendly presence in the community throughout her eight-year residency. The apartment, located in one of Manhattan's most desirable neighborhoods, had served as the couple's primary city residence.
As the legal process moves forward, Gilbert appears focused on establishing stability away from the city while supporting her husband through the upcoming trial. The move represents a significant transition for the couple, who now face an extended period before the case reaches its conclusion in 2027.
