R&B singer Chris Brown has been ordered to pay nearly $13 million to his former housekeeper after she was brutally attacked by his 200-pound guard dog at his California home in 2020 . The verdict came after a two-week civil trial in Los Angeles, where a jury found Brown and his company, Black Pyramid LLC, negligent in the incident .

Maria Avila was taking out the trash at Brown's Tarzana residence when a Caucasian shepherd named Hades mauled her without warning . The attack resulted in permanent facial disfigurement, nerve damage, vision loss, and extensive scarring . Avila testified that the dog ripped off "large chunks of her skin," requiring multiple surgeries and skin grafts from her abdomen to repair her arm .

The jury awarded Avila $12.9 million in damages. Her sister, Patricia, who was also working at the home during the attack and witnessed the incident, received $885,000 for emotional distress. Avila's husband, Oscar Olivo, was granted $50,000 .

Despite the legal setback, Brown took to Instagram to celebrate becoming the best-selling male R&B and pop artist in RIAA history . The 37-year-old performer surpassed Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, and Bruno Mars in certified sales .

During the trial, Brown testified that Hades was kept for security, not as a pet . He claimed he had warned the housekeepers that the dogs were "absolutely not" friendly and instructed them only to go outside with security present. However, the sisters denied this conversation occurred, citing language barriers .

Brown admitted fleeing the property after the attack and acknowledged he did not call 911 personally. He told the jury he left on his manager's advice, fearing a "media circus" given his celebrity status . "The blood kind of freaked me out," Brown testified, explaining he was in shock .

Avila, speaking through an interpreter, told the court she can no longer work as a housekeeper due to limited arm strength and post-traumatic stress disorder that prevents her from being around dogs. "I will never be the same again," she testified .

Patricia's attorney, Michael C. Murphy Jr., expressed satisfaction with the verdict, stating his team was "thrilled" to obtain justice for his client after more than five years of litigation .

This trial adds to Brown's ongoing legal troubles. He is scheduled to stand trial in the UK in October over an alleged attack on a music producer at a London nightclub in 2023 .
