Prince Harry will not be staying at Buckingham Palace during his upcoming visit to the United Kingdom, following a breakdown in communication between the Duke of Sussex and royal officials over accommodation arrangements.
The Duke of Sussex arrived in London on Monday for a series of charity engagements, including events marking the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games in Birmingham. His wife, Meghan Markle, and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, did not accompany him on the trip.
Earlier Monday, a spokesperson for Prince Harry announced that the Duke had accepted an invitation from King Charles III to stay at Buckingham Palace. However, Buckingham Palace quickly contradicted this claim, stating that no such stay would occur.
Royal sources indicated that Harry failed to formally respond to the accommodation offer by the deadline, which expired at the end of last week. The palace requires a minimum notice period to prepare accommodations and arrange Royal Household staff for guests.
According to palace officials, Harry's team initially declined the offer on Saturday before reversing course and accepting it later that day. By that time, however, officials said it was too late to make the necessary arrangements.
Harry's spokesperson pushed back on this account, claiming the offer had been formally accepted and then "withdrawn" without clear justification. The Duke's team described the decision as "disappointing".
Adding to the complexity, royal sources cited concerns that Harry's presence at Buckingham Palace could compromise the King's constitutional position, given that a High Court ruling in the Duke's privacy case against Associated Newspapers is scheduled for Tuesday.
Harry's spokesperson rejected this reasoning, noting that palace officials had been aware of the court timetable since last Thursday. The Duke spent much of last week arranging private security after learning his family would not receive taxpayer-funded protection during the visit.
The dispute highlights the ongoing strained relationship between Prince Harry and the royal family since he and Meghan stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California. The Duke has not stayed at Buckingham Palace for an extended period since leaving royal life.
It remains unclear whether King Charles and Prince Harry will meet during this visit. The Duke is expected to proceed with his scheduled charity appearances in London and Birmingham this week. Security arrangements for his family during any potential future visits remain unresolved.
