Dakota Fanning and Jake Johnson star in the new romantic drama "The Sun Never Sets," where a requested break in a relationship leads to an intense love triangle set against the rugged backdrop of Alaska.

According to Geo.tv, the film marks the first on-screen pairing of Fanning and Johnson in director Joe Swanberg’s return to feature filmmaking. The story centers on Wendy, played by Fanning, whose life takes an unexpected turn when her boyfriend Jack, portrayed by Johnson, asks for space in their relationship.

During their time apart, Wendy reconnects with her ex-boyfriend Chuck, played by Corey Michael Smith. What begins as a search for clarity quickly evolves into an emotionally charged triangle that challenges conventional romance tropes. The trailer showcases raw moments of heartbreak, including pointed exchanges between the characters.

In one scene, Jack tells Wendy, “I’m in love with you. Anything that he can offer you, I will offer you.” Wendy later responds, “You only wanted me when you thought you couldn’t have me anymore.”

Swanberg described the project as deeply personal, drawing from autobiographical elements of his own life. Johnson said the opportunity to collaborate with the director made the decision straightforward. For Fanning, the Alaskan setting became integral to the story.

“Alaska is almost the most important character in the film,” Fanning said. “Without the Alaskan landscape, it would be a completely different movie.”

The remote location also fostered a close bond between the lead actors off-screen. Johnson shared that he and Fanning lived next door to each other and shared a rental car during production. They took in local sights, including glaciers, and timed their stay with salmon season.

The film also features a cameo from Johnson’s “New Girl” co-star Lamorne Morris, who joined the production for a brief appearance.

"The Sun Never Sets" is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on August 28, followed by a nationwide expansion on September 4. The movie arrives as Swanberg, known for his intimate character-driven stories, returns to the big screen with a narrative that blends emotional complexity and striking natural scenery.

The project highlights Fanning’s continued range in dramatic roles and Johnson’s appeal in grounded, relatable characters. Early footage suggests the film will resonate with audiences drawn to authentic relationship stories that avoid easy resolutions.
