Kjell Nilsson, ‘Mad Max 2’ Villain Lord Humungus, Dies at 76 After Kidney Disease Battle

Kjell Nilsson, the Swedish actor and Olympic-class weightlifter who terrorized audiences as the masked warlord Lord Humungus in the 1981 post-apocalyptic classic Mad Max 2, passed away on July 2 at his home in Queensland, Australia. He was 76.

His family confirmed his death in a heartfelt Facebook statement, revealing that the actor had been battling end-stage kidney disease for the past four and a half years . After a long and painful struggle that included undergoing dialysis three times a week, Nilsson made the decision to stop treatment on the Sunday before his death, choosing to take control of his pain and body .

The family shared that the actor’s final days were spent surrounded by peace and loved ones. He passed away peacefully in his sleep, with his sons by his side . “He did it his way,” the statement read, reflecting a life lived with fierce independence and determination .

Nilsson’s resilience was nothing short of remarkable. In 2022, medical professionals told him he was unlikely to survive until Christmas following kidney failure . Instead, he defied those expectations, celebrating four more Christmases and gaining precious extra years with his family .

This was not the first time he had beaten the odds. Around 40 years ago, severe blood clotting in his legs presented him with a stark choice: double amputation or permanent complications. He chose to keep his legs against medical advice . Through relentless weight training and sheer force of will, he regained his mobility, with some doctors later referring to him as a "walking miracle" .

Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1949, Nilsson first made his mark as an elite weightlifter . He moved to Australia in 1980 to train Swedish athletes for the Moscow Olympics . There, he met his wife, Australian actress Kate Ferguson, who encouraged him to try acting .

He landed the role of Lord Humungus in George Miller’s Mad Max 2 (released as The Road Warrior in the U.S.), starring opposite Mel Gibson . His imposing physique and menacing presence made the character an iconic villain. Time magazine critic Richard Corliss famously noted that "malevolence courses through his huge pectorals" . His other credits include The Pirate Movie and The Edge of Power. He made his final screen appearance in the 2023 film Howlin Refrain .

In his final days, Nilsson expressed gratitude for his career in bodybuilding, his iconic role, and the life he built between Sweden and Australia . His representative, Chris Carbaugh, remembered him as "a wonderful person" who loved the Mad Max fans and embraced the role that brought him international fame .
