Zendaya’s highly anticipated collaboration with director Christopher Nolan got off to a freezing start. The 29-year-old actress recently revealed that her first day on the set of "The Odyssey" was far from the smooth experience she had envisioned. Filming in the harsh Icelandic elements presented a physical challenge that momentarily threw the seasoned performer off her game.
During a candid conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Zendaya explained that she had arrived on set fully prepared and confident in her lines. However, the extreme cold quickly became an insurmountable obstacle. She detailed that the frigid temperatures were so severe they caused her mouth to physically freeze, making it difficult to enunciate her dialogue. The unexpected discomfort made performing her lines properly a genuine struggle during those initial hours of production.
Despite the rocky beginning on location in Iceland, the "Euphoria" star refused to let the moment undermine her confidence. She acknowledged that working with a filmmaker of Nolan’s caliber, alongside a cast of Hollywood heavyweights, brings a level of pressure that is both electrifying and intimidating. Rather than succumbing to anxiety, the actress chose to channel her energy into maintaining focus and delivering her best performance on a daily basis.
Zendaya’s perseverance clearly paid off, as Nolan has since expressed high praise for her work. In a separate interview with Fandango, the acclaimed director described the actress as "always perfect" during the production. He elaborated on his decision to cast her in the role of the Greek goddess Athena, stating that she possesses the exact grace and commanding screen presence the iconic character demands.
Interestingly, Zendaya is not the only star of the epic adaptation who dealt with first-day jitters. Her co-star and real-life partner, Tom Holland, recently admitted to a similarly awkward start. Holland revealed that he initially believed Nolan was displeased with his acting, only to later learn that the director was simply pausing scenes because the IMAX cameras used on set have a strict three-minute recording limit.
Fans eagerly await the release of this ambitious project, which promises to bring Homer’s ancient tale to life through Nolan’s distinctive cinematic vision. "The Odyssey" is officially set to sail into theaters on July 17, distributed by Universal Pictures. With a blend of challenging locations and a star-studded ensemble, the film continues to generate significant buzz as one of the year’s most anticipated blockbusters.
