After years of being nearly impossible to find online, the Spice Girls' beloved 1997 musical comedy "Spice World" is finally making its way to streaming platforms. Band member Melanie Chisholm, known to fans as Sporty Spice, confirmed the long-awaited news during a recent podcast appearance.
The film has been caught in complex ownership disputes that kept it out of digital circulation for years. Chisholm explained that multiple parties held rights to the movie, creating a tangled legal situation that prevented streaming availability.
"We've had to come together," Chisholm stated on The Louis Theroux Podcast. "The Spice Girls now fully own it, so we will be presenting it at some point in hopefully the not-too-distant future for people to enjoy."
The announcement arrives during a significant milestone period for the iconic British pop group. Wednesday marked the 30th anniversary of their groundbreaking debut single "Wannabe," which catapulted the quintet to global superstardom in 1996. The anniversary of their debut album "Spice" will follow in September.
"Spice World" captured the group at the peak of their fame, following Victoria Beckham, Mel B, Emma Bunton, Mel C, and Geri Halliwell as they navigated London in their iconic double-decker bus. The film featured an impressive supporting cast including Elton John, Hugh Laurie, Richard E. Grant, Roger Moore, Jennifer Saunders, Alan Cumming, Meat Loaf, and Elvis Costello.
Written by Kim Fuller and directed by Bob Spiers, the film became a cult classic among fans who have eagerly awaited its digital release. The movie offered audiences a whimsical behind-the-scenes look at the group's whirlwind lifestyle during the height of "Girl Power" mania.
Despite the nostalgia surrounding these anniversaries, Chisholm has tempered expectations about a full reunion tour. She noted that while the band members remain in regular communication, no concrete plans are currently in place for all five to perform together again.
"We're communicating all the time, and we want to do something, who knows when?" Chisholm told The Smallzy Show. "But I still feel very optimistic, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you'll see the Spice Girls together in the future."
The last time all five original members performed together was at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. A 2019 reunion tour proceeded without Beckham, leaving that Olympic performance as the most recent appearance of the complete lineup on stage.
For devoted fans who have waited years to stream the comedy classic, the impending digital release offers a welcome consolation while hopes for a full reunion remain alive.
