The mother of singer-songwriter Oliver Tree has publicly spoken out for the first time since her son was killed in a devastating helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that claimed the lives of six people.
Days after the tragic accident, Christine Begin Nickell shared a poignant tribute on Facebook, honoring the life and legacy of her 32-year-old son, born Oliver Tree Nickell. Accompanying her message was a throwback photograph of Tree as a young boy, smiling warmly while holding a dog.
"Our dear son Oliver, you made this world a better place," Nickell wrote in her post. "We are so proud of you. RIP," she concluded, offering a short yet deeply emotional farewell to her son.
The Fatal Incident
The crash occurred on Sunday, June 14, when two helicopters collided mid-air over the western zone of Rio de Janeiro. According to reports, one of the helicopters plummeted into the yard of a car dealership, sparking a massive fire that engulfed at least 20 electric vehicles. Authorities confirmed that there were no survivors from either aircraft. Investigators from the Civil Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro are currently working to determine the exact cause of the collision, with the Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents expected to issue a formal report.
A Life and Career Cut Short
Oliver Tree, a California native known for his distinctive bowl haircut and genre-blending alternative pop music, had been in South America for the first leg of his world tour promoting his latest album. His final performance took place in São Paulo on June 6. He was scheduled to continue the tour with a concert in Lisbon on July 1, followed by a series of shows across the United Kingdom and the United States.
The crash also claimed the lives of Argentine YouTuber Gaspar "Gaspi" Prim, filmmaker Lucas Vignale, music producer Lucas Brito Chaves, and pilots Charles Marsillac and Alexandre Souza. Authorities confirmed the identification of all six victims, bringing closure to the families as the investigation continues.
An Outpouring of Grief
The news of Tree's death has prompted an overwhelming outpouring of grief from fans, friends, and collaborators across the entertainment industry. Among those paying tribute was his ex-girlfriend, musician Melanie Martinez, who dated Tree from 2019 to 2020. Sharing her sorrow on Instagram Stories, Martinez revealed she had been struggling to process the sudden loss.
"Been an absolute wreck today," Martinez wrote. "It's really hard to understand how someone who you once shared such a specific and formative time of your life with can all of a sudden be gone". She also praised his dedication to his craft, remembering him for his "contagious and warm" laugh and his ability to maintain a "sense of childlike wonder and awe". Other artists, including KSI, Diplo, Kid Cudi, and Bebe Rexha, have also shared public tributes, with KSI noting that Tree "still had so much life to live". As authorities continue their investigation and the world mourns the loss of a unique creative talent, Tree's mother's tribute stands as a powerful testament to the son she described as making the world a better place.
