The Argentina Football Federation (AFA) is currently under investigation by the FBI for alleged money laundering and financial misconduct, according to TV9 Bangla. The probe comes amid the ongoing FIFA World Cup, placing additional pressure on the Argentine football body.
Reports from Argentine newspaper La Nacion reveal that the investigation focuses on how the AFA, led by President Claudio Tapia, may have conducted hundreds of millions of dollars in questionable transactions within the United States. The FBI is scrutinizing whether any fraudulent activities occurred during these financial dealings.
A key element in the investigation is a Florida-based company called Tourpraudenter LLC, which handles financial transactions for the Argentine Football Federation outside Argentina. The company is accused of large-scale financial embezzlement.
According to La Nacion, between late 2023 and early 2024, Xavier Faroni, the owner of Tourpraudenter, conducted multiple dollar transactions across five major banks: Citibank, Synovus, JP Morgan, PNC Bank, and Bank of America. Bank records indicate that Tourpraudenter earned approximately $260 million (around 2,500 crore INR) from the AFA. Out of this, about $57 million (550 crore INR) was distributed to various organizations and beneficiaries, though the reasons for these payments remain unclear.
Claudio Tapia has faced corruption allegations before, and former Argentine President Javier Milei had ordered investigations against him. This latest probe adds to the ongoing scrutiny of Tapia’s administration.
As Lionel Messi and the Argentine team approach a potential World Cup victory, these financial misconduct allegations cast a shadow over the federation's reputation.
Why this matters
This investigation highlights the broader challenge of financial transparency in international sports organizations. With the global spotlight on Argentina during the World Cup, the FBI’s scrutiny could have significant implications for governance and accountability within football federations worldwide.
Moreover, uncovering potential financial crimes at such a high level may lead to reforms that protect the integrity of the sport going forward.
